Social Justice 12 Activation Assignment
This course’s focus of study is upon social injustice in Canada and around the world-- in the various forms it appears, its causes and consequences for human survival and livability, and the nature and degree of our responsibility working towards a more socially equitable network of countries, nations and communities.
In this course you will be asked to examine your own beliefs and values and realize your capacity to effect positive change in this world.

This first assignment will show how well you can:
- Observe situations with a critical eye
- Consider the opinions/feelings of both sides
- Share your thoughts on a sensitive issue in writing
- Discover how learning more about a topic can sometimes change your long held opinions

Part 1: What Does Social Justice Mean to You?
Create a visual interpretation that depicts your personal definition of social justice.
I want to know:

2. How is social justice a part of your life?
3. What issue is most important to you?

Part 2: Born into Brothels
A) View the documentary: "Born into Brothels"
B) Empathy Journal: Create a journal entry where you write down what you are thinking while viewing the film. If you choose, respond to the following questions in your journal:
You are not limited to only answering the above questions (feel free to write more!) Your response must be at least 2 paragraphs in length. Ensure that you have checked your spelling and grammar before handing it in!
C) Google+ Discussion Post: Choose one of the essential questions below and comment on how the question relates to the ideas/theme/message of the film. This should be approximately one-two paragraphs in length and make reference to specific aspects of the film. You must post at least one of your own ideas, and comment on at least one other person's idea.

Essential Questions:
B) Empathy Journal: Create a journal entry where you write down what you are thinking while viewing the film. If you choose, respond to the following questions in your journal:
- What are your initial feelings/thoughts about the film? What about for the individuals in the film? Did your perceptions/ideas change after viewing the film?
- What human rights issues are illustrated in the film? Are you aware of any international laws that may be in place to stop or prevent those abuses?
- What are the changes in the children’s outlook and personalities when they are taken out of the brothel to the beach and zoo? If these children were taken out of the brothel environment permanently, do you think that they could fully recover from the injustices and trauma that they have previously faced? why? why not?
- if life in the brothels is all the children have ever known, then how do they know that it is not how they want to live? if it has become the norm, then how do they know that it is not normal for a child to grow up in that environment? are we born with an internal human rights’ radar? is awareness of human rights a part of human nature?

- What are the responsibilities of the individual in regard to
- issues of social justice? When should an individual take a stand against what he/she believes to be an injustice? What are the most effective ways to do this?
- What are the factors that create an imbalance of power within
- a culture? What does power have to do with fairness and justice?
- Is it ever necessary to question the status quo? What are the benefits and consequences of questioning / challenging social order?
- Do we have choices concerning fairness and justice?
- What does it mean to be invisible?
