Learner-led Seminars
These are some of the questions we may be looking at over the next several weeks:
What is feminism? What does it mean to be a feminist? To what extent has the women’s movement achieved its goals? What is sexism and how has it affected women's lives throughout the 20th century? What issues of oppression and inequality do girls and women deal with today? What is the role of men in the feminist movement? Why does violence against women happen? What can be done to prevent the recurrence of violence? Why is it important to highlight the struggles of women internationally? What responsibility do Canadians have to oppressed women around the world?
These questions and a few others will be explored over the next few weeks. And, you will be leading our exploration of these topics. Working in your self-selected topic, you will develop and facilitate a 5-day learning experience/seminar on your topic.
I encourage you to design a seminar so that you are interacting with the learners.
Remember that the point of the assignment is to gain valuable research skills, to engage with others in your community, to showcase what you know/have learned about the topic of choice. This is NOT about you delivering big pieces of content, choose selectively, and allow your learners to explore the topic in their own way.
Remember, as well, that in preparing for your seminar week, you will become the 'experts' on your topic. Try not to overwhelm your learners with content or activities - each learner should expect to be engaged in discussions, readings, and activities for about an hour a day, over 5-day facilitation period. I would suggest you use my plan for week one (Women's Issues) as a guide: start with a short introductory activity, perhaps provide a reading(s) or video, perhaps you just want your peers to blog about a topic, and/or find a related article to discuss to you may want others to create KISS (KEEP IT SIMPLE & SEQUENTIAL), but engaging!
ALSO, you do provide the activity, but you are not expected to mark any work...just comment on your peers ideas.
An important part of any learning experience is what we do with it afterward. What is of interest to me is the new learning you've arrived at after this experience. You will be expected to write an honest reflection on your experience as a seminar leader. What new learning did you arrive at through your experience with your peers? The core of reflective practice is constant development through honest reflection. A large component of this course will be developing not only the ability to communicate effectively in online and off-line learning environments, but to also receive feedback with grace and to engage ongoing critical reflection.
During your week, you will post your seminar on your Weebly website, and paste the URL for the website page in the Google+ Forum. In this way, everyone will know who is presenting and where to access the content for the week.
Remember to cite your sources--at the bottom of your page include a "Works Cited" section, where you add your cited sources (MLA format).

Evaluation & Assessment
Please be creative :). The "Experiential Learning" component this course is intended for you to "stretch your wings" as social justice students. To that end, please put aside any inhibitions related to 'making the grade' and increase your chances of really learning by experimenting, being open-minded, but most of all being curious.
I will be evaluating you according to the following aspects:
